“The Goddess Among Mortals” 4ft x 3ft, Acrylic and Oil on Gesso Canvas. Project 2 for painting class This piece is about erasure, the violence of colonization, and reimagining the Purépecha goddess Xarátanga. In this painting I wanted to portray the goddess as contemporary. As someone who can exist among us during this time but still hold on to traditional visual cues. She is wearing pants which is something that would not be allowed in the culture, but I like to challenge gender roles. She is held by the living and the dead, roses form an abstract crescent moon to represent her association with the Moon she sits calmly on an agave plant not expressing the pain of the thorns. Her foot is pointing down with a red drip to represent the violence of colonialism. The background distracts you, but it’s made of shapes and gestures. Almost like a puzzle I’m trying to put together. contemporarypainting
